Shan Masood Confirmed as Pakistan’s Test Captain for 2025-27 WTC Cycle

Lahore – The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially confirmed Shan Masood as Pakistan’s Test captain for the upcoming 2025–27 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle, backing him to lead despite a turbulent run over the past two years.

PCB Sticks With Shan Masood

The announcement came after Shan Masood and red-ball head coach Azhar Mahmood met PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi in Lahore. The board emphasized that both the captain and coach will enjoy a “free hand” in managing the Test setup, though they will not sit on the selection committee.

A Rocky Start to His Captaincy

Masood replaced Babar Azam as Test skipper in November 2023, but Pakistan endured a disappointing 2023–25 WTC campaign, finishing bottom of the table with just three wins. His leadership came under scrutiny, especially after being demoted from Category B to Category D in the latest central contracts list.

Despite speculation linking Salman Ali Agha to the role, the PCB has chosen continuity over change.

Personal Form Improving, But Wins Still Missing

While Pakistan struggled, Shan Masood has shown signs of personal improvement. Shifting from No. 3 to opener, he has scored two centuries in his last four Test series, lifting his batting average into the mid-30s, the best phase of his career so far.

However, Pakistan have lost 9 of 12 Tests under his leadership, raising questions about his ability to convert batting form into team success.

Next Challenge: South Africa Series in October

Pakistan will begin the new WTC cycle against defending champions South Africa at home in October 2025. The series will serve as an early test of Masood’s ability to reset Pakistan’s red-ball fortunes alongside coach Azhar Mahmood.

For now, the PCB is banking on stability over change—but whether Shan Masood can deliver consistent victories remains the ultimate question.
